What is Equine Assisted Therapy & what are the benefits

Equine Therapy has many benefits

Equine therapy, also known as equine-assisted therapy, offers a range of benefits for mental and physical health, including improved emotional regulation, confidence, and social skills. It can also help with physical impairments like balance, coordination, and body control. The unique relationship with horses fosters trust, communication, and a sense of accomplishment, promoting personal growth and reducing stress.

Mental Health Benefits

  • Emotional Regulation:Equine therapy can help individuals manage their emotions and impulses by learning to communicate with the horse calmly.
  • Stress Reduction:The calming presence of horses and the outdoor environment can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression.
  • Self-Awareness and Confidence:Horses mirror our emotions and nonverbal cues, allowing us to gain a deeper understanding of ourselves and build confidence.
  • Improved Communication:The need to communicate with a horse fosters enhanced communication skills, both verbal and nonverbal.
  • Social Skills:Equine therapy can improve social skills by promoting empathy, connection, and social interaction in a safe and supportive environment.
  • Trauma Treatment:The non-judgmental nature of horses can create a safe space for individuals to process traumatic experiences and develop coping mechanisms.
  • Anxiety and Fear Reduction:Equine therapy can help reduce anxiety, fear, and social isolation by providing a safe space to express emotions without direct confrontation.

Physical Benefits

  • Improved Motor Skills:Working with horses, including riding, can improve balance, coordination, and motor skills.
  • Reduced Muscle Tension:The rhythmic movement of the horse can help reduce muscle tension and improve overall body mechanics.
  • Increased Flexibility and Strength:Equine therapy can enhance flexibility and strength through various activities with horses.
  • Pain Management:The release of endorphins during equine therapy can help manage pain and improve mood.

Other Benefits

  • Personal Growth:Equine therapy promotes personal growth by fostering self-awareness, trust, and a sense of accomplishment.
  • Trust and Boundaries:Working with horses can help individuals learn about trust, boundaries, and self-respect.
  • Improved Relationships:Equine therapy can help individuals improve their relationships by fostering empathy, communication, and understanding.
  • Sense of Responsibility and Ownership:Caring for a horse requires concentration, selflessness, and teamwork, which can foster a sense of responsibility and ownership.

Children & Teens

Equine assisted therapy may be just as effective with children and teens as it is with adult clients. As with adults, children can experience challenges such as trauma, anxiety, depression, PTSD and more.

Equine therapy offers them a therapeutic environment that can feel less threatening and more inviting than a traditional talk therapy office. The majority of children participating in equine therapy are between the ages of 6 to 18 years old.

Children often find it difficult to open up and process painful emotions and experiences. Equine-assisted therapy allows youth, and people of all ages, to work on issues such as:

  • Assertiveness
  • Confidence
  • Developing and maintaining relationships
  • Emotional awareness
  • Empathy
  • Impulse control
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Social skills
  • Trust in others
  • Trust in self
